Christopher Wren’s Royal Hospital has many wings and annexes within the complex, including a series of single storey courtyard buildings which contain bars and mess rooms for the Pensioners. As part of the improvements planned for the Grade 1 Listed Building, the social club and sitting rooms were to be modernised and redecorated but strictly within the confines and character of the original building. The design was by WISH interior architects and designers.
GRID supplied listed building advice to the design team and in particular on planning matters and identifying original walls, doors and decorative features and how they could be modified or replaced. Working with historic paint specialists and Kensington and Chelsea’s conservation officers, the remodelling was agreed very quickly and strip out works commenced. Structural alterations replaced lost walls or created new openings and all joinery designed to in the period. Where elements like doors could not be re-used they were stored for future records and re-use.
