Lambeth Planning Committee passed the application for the redevelopment of Oval Gasworks in Lambeth. Starting in 2013 with a wider area masterplan, the Oval Gasworks site is to be comprehensively redeveloped for over 700 homes, offices, retail and leisure facilities in a 2 hectare site. Containing a listed Grade 2 gasholder which is widely recognised on the London skyline and from the Kia Oval, the development will be the catalyst for transformational change of the former industrial lands. The Generator will contain co working and office accommodation offering employment to over 1000 people just a short walk from Vauxhall station. New public realm will connect the surrounding streets which have been isolated for over 150 years by the contaminated gas site. The new framework will contain 3 perimeter developments with courtyards and the circular gasholder building which - thanks to its dimensions as one of the biggest gasholders in the world - also has an internal courtyard. The copper cladding reflects the former gas tank but with a stepped profile to allow large roof terraces.
